Yahoo Declares Open War On Google

If you glossed over the news about Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO)'s new mobile application for smartphones earlier this week, I'd invite you to take another look. Yahoo Mobile integrates all its services in one place better than Google does.

I use the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) application for the iPhone. It works well enough, letting me start searches quickly and log in to my other Google services.

Yahoo's new mobile application aims to bring all the content you're interested in to one spot -- your phone. Yahoo Mobile is an application for smartphones such as the iPhone, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) S60, and BlackBerry. It also comes in browser form.

In all the versions of the application that I saw in Barcelona this week, I was impressed with its ability to merge services such as RSS, e-mail, IM, SMS, contacts, calender, search, and other applications into one, easy-to-use application. It lets Yahoo users have one app to manage almost all of the things they use the Internet for.

Some of the services included are Yahoo oneSearch, a customizable Today screen, oneConnect, e-mail, Pulse (access to nine different social networking sites), Yahoo Messenger, Contacts and Calendar, Yahoo News, onePlace (RSS), oneSearch with Voice, Maps, Opera Mini, and Widgets.

If that sounds confusing, let me assure you, it isn't. Most users will be able to master the software in a few minutes. It works somewhat differently for each platform, but the end result is the same.

Yahoo has offered many of the services as standalone products, and tied some of them together with its former Yahoo Go product. Yahoo Mobile takes things to a new level.

This is the first clear attempt made by Yahoo to recover some of its lost mojo. It is a major new offering, and takes a shot directly at Google's own mobile services.

The software is in beta now, and will be available as a free download beginning in March.
